June 5 Day 25

FIRST FULL DAY out in the SUN!!!!!

Over the last few days I've had the french doors open and slowly moving the puppy play area toward and out the door.  Just outside the door is a three foot overhang that gives the puppies a sense of security.  My first litter was brought out to the deck without a gradual introduction and they felt too exposed.  After all, they've spent their entire life indoors... all 3 weeks of it :)  Despite full spectrum lighting the room isn't as bright as the spring time sun (when it's out!) and even a puppy can tell that the sky is WAYYYYYY up there.  The gradual process works beautifully and yesterday  they trotted out onto the deck without any hesitation.    I had two dog beds about a yard from the front door where they hung out to nurse.  They are just starting to get into some serious play  and there's only one thing better then and watch puppies playing in the sun.....Watching Mica playing with puppies!

Then,  just when things couldn't get any better .... Diana dropped by to see if she could figure out which puppy she might get.  It was fun to watch her analyzing each one of them .  She came knowing that she wanted a small girl and left with the notion that a big boy might be in her future!  Of course it's way too early to know what their final personalities will be.  There's still a lot of learning, developing and changing to happen.  It's still fun to play the game of "What's the TRUE personally of that puppy."

June 4 Day 24

162 Toe Nails

Time to do puppy nails again.  It's getting more difficult since the hair on the feet is growing and now getting snagged in the nail clipper.  For the most part the puppies don't even know I'm doing it.  When they were smaller I was able to do it while they nursed.  Of course the whole idea there was to clip nails and manipulate feet while they were getting the positive reinforcement of nursing.  Now they're too squirmy and big so I take them into my lap for the process.

You can see that the tips are white.  The nails are white at birth and slowly turn black.

Some breeders say that if the nails are all white than the  puppy will be silver.  Almost all the puppies in the litter had white nails... ironically the only one who didn't was Blaze who is definitely going to be silver ;^)
Guess what else we can start counting?

Mica continues to be enthralled by the puppers and Nickel continues to place herself between them.  I don't blame her at all since he's such a big boy, but he has been showing lovely control and surprising body awareness when he's around them.  He usually lays down when he interacts without them.  I had to teach this to Eureka but Mica seems to do it naturally.  He loves to lick their  faces... it's very sweet.

We finished our day by taking comparison shots-  Here's Three Weeks:

June 2 DAY 22

It's A Free For ALL!!!!

Head Line NEWS!!!!....

Puppies Go On a Free For All... FOOD FIGHT!!!!!

While feeding Nickel in the Whelping Box two puppies decided to Partake.  They were VERY interested in what Mama was eating and went for the gusto.  It didn't take long for all the puppers to become distracted from the Milk Bar and go find out what was happening at the Raw Bar.  Mom didn't seem to mind much (she probably didn't realize that she competing against a School of Puppy Piranhas). Obviously I'm easily fooled as well and soon found myself bring more plates of food.  Alas, the puppies didn't show any social graces as they dived into the food.

MOM didn't have a chance!!!

Just yesterday I realized that I'd never keep up with Nickel's caloric intake (of 4 pounds of raw food a day) and ordered delivery of  Darwin's Raw Dog Food .  It's quite a bit more expensive than the food I feed my girls.  Opposed to my home ground  'Cuisinart,' mixed and measured Glop, it's a complete meal: a complete mix of fruit/veg/meat/mineral/vitamin.

Well, in light of then new gastronomic delights of the puppers,   I'm excited to say that Darwin's "degree of grind" makes it the perfect Puppy meal.  In the past I've had to mix and process my own (a very lengthy and messy ordeal!).  With 9 puppies, the Darwin will be well worth the extra cost.

OY... this is only the beginning!

June 1 Day 21 WEEK THREE

THE  BEGINNING OF TRANSFORMATION!!!!!

Puppies are developing in leaps and bounds.  The puppies are starting to interact with each other.  They are growling, barking, wagging, pawing and mouthing each other.  They are miniature poodles....without the hair :)

They are moving around with much more balance and coordination.  Sometimes even making little dashes across the whelping box...ending in a big Poodle Puppy Jam of course.

Nickel surprised me today.  I was wondering why she was letting the puppies bark and bark and bark...  Obviously they were HUNGRY!!!!!   I was just starting to think that she'd 'called it quits,'  when she entered the box and started to nurse.  Well... three hours later:  Bark Bark Bark Ignore Ignore Ignore...Nurse.  Three hours later:  Bark Bark Bark Ignore Ignore Ignore...Nurse.  THEN I GOT IT (see I'm clearly not as smart as my girls!!! :)   She was waiting until the puppies stopped DEMANDING TO BE FED... and settled into a nice 'quiet pile of puppies' before she entered the box to feed them.  Man-O-Man is she making our jobs easier in the future!
Poodle Puppy Conspiracy Theory:  Mom is not always on our side.

And WHO won this battle?! :)

May 31 Day 20

TEETH ARE ERUPTING

Believe it or not the puppies are already getting some of their teeth.  They are beginning to chew on each other, their own feet and legs, toys and even Human Fingers!  yikes!!  Actually you can feel tiny nubs of the teeth under their gums.

They also started to wag their tails for the very first time.  These are Very enthusiastic puppies.... and don't hold back on expressing themselves.
